Darksiders II Brings Death to Life - Preview

Darksiders was a great concept that just couldn't live up to the games it was inspired by. Legend of Zelda mixed with God of War was the best way to describe it and it was a great game but it's hard to live up to those kind of names. Darksiders ended with a bit of a cliff hanger and the promise that later games would focus on the other members of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse instead of just War.

Darksiders II picks up where the first left off, but this time you control Death, who is on a quest to prove his brother War innocent and bring back the fallen human race. Death isn't quite the bruiser that his brother was and he can actually do a fair bit of Prince of Persia-like free running stuff. Wall running, bouncing between walls to get further and further up, and hanging on to suspended beams are all par for the course.

Death's main weapons are his scythes, but unlike the usual depiction of Death with one gigantic scythe this version has two smaller scythes which he can attach to one another if necessary, or even throw. The demo I played took me through the very first moments of the game when Death decides to go save War and seeks out the Keeper of Secrets to find out how he can accomplish this. There were no puzzles in this short demo, just traversing an icy dungeon with parkour and killing the odd pack of enemies that you need to pass through.

Like War, Death levels up as you play through the game, but there are even more RPG elements in Darksiders II. Enemies can actually drop loot, with different tiers of quality. That means that somehow enemies all over this world carry around copies of Death's dual scythes on them, but that's besides the point. The highest loot tier are possessed weapons which level up as you feed other lesser items and you can gain new abilities in this way.

Death isn't confined to just using his scythes though; during the demo I quickly picked up a large axe as a secondary weapon. Once I came upon the Keeper of Secrets there was a short boss battle before he revealed that if I wanted to resurrect humanity I would have to go to the Tree of Life. Sounds so obvious now that he said it.

My time with Darksiders II was short but there's a lot there to be excited for if you're a fan of the first game. I really enjoy the lore, and any game with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as the main focus is alright in my book. I'm not sure how excited people will be about loot in an entirely single player game, but maybe that's just me. Look for Darksiders II when it releases in August this year.
