Last year’s Metro: 2033 surprised everyone with its great storytelling and atmosphere. In fact some would even go as far as to say it has one of the best narratives to be found in a first person shooter period. At this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo I got a chance to see the second game in the (now) Metro series being demoed, Metro: Last Light and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that you should keep an eye out for this one, it’s going to be good.
The demo that was shown to us at the THQ booth brought us back into the metro system under Moscow, the apocalypse is passed but mankind must still remain hidden in the shadows. You take control of Artyom, the protagonist from the first game and humanity’s only hope. The demo takes us through a secret mission as Artyom must sneak his way into an enemy camp. What ensues is a highly tense and engaging fight through an enemy compound. The demo ends with an insane firefight on trains speeding through the Russian underground.
Metro: Last Light is, and I’m putting this mildly, a very, very pretty game. Sure the graphics and environments are gorgeous and highly detailed but the lighting is the stand out star. Every object is just perfectly illuminated and plays off the eerie setting wonderfully and to the immersion of the experience. I am also happy to report that while Metro: Last Light is not based on the actual book sequel; Metro: 2034 it is being scripted by the author of the book series, so expect the same kind of deep and engaging narrative as the original.
Metro: Last Light is sure to please fans of both horror games and first person shooters alike. With its thrilling plot, stunning visuals and lighting and gameplay that lets it stand with the best of them this is definitely one game you should look out for. Metro: Last Light will release sometime in 2012 and will be available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC and the Wii U console. Also for the Wii U version, we have been told that the game will be fully playable with the new controller as well as have some special features to take advantage of the device.
