Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction is a game based on the latest season of Ben 10: a cartoon currently running on Cartoon Network. For those who don’t keep up with children’s cartoons (shame on you) Ben 10 is a kid who finds a watch with alien technology which allows him to turn into a number of aliens at will. The current season gives Ben the ability to not only turn into aliens but also to turn into stronger versions of those aliens, called ultimate forms.
The game plays like your standard beat ‘em up with enemies assailing you until you've fought them off and moved to the next section. Switching between alien forms helps to solve certain puzzles and pass by obstacles.
One interesting part was a Quick Time Event sequence near the end of the demo where Ben would run into obstacles and you could press any of three buttons to turn into different aliens and solve the problem. If a billboard is about to fall onto you, turning into an agile alien might end with you gingerly dodging the billboard, while a larger alien will smash right through it. It’s a smart idea for the demographic of the game that lets the developers make almost “no fail” QTE sequences that also have a bit of variety to them.
Once I passed this QTE sequence I was turned into an ultimate alien and quickly decimated the boss in front of me. The developer mentioned that they wanted the ultimate alien to feel really powerful compared to the normal aliens. Also of note is that the voices from the cartoon make an appearance in the game to make the feel more authentic.
I played this demo on 360 but it should be noted that the final game will be released for all platforms (PS2, PS3, 360, Wii, DS). Those looking for a gift for their Ben 10 loving child may want to take a look at Ben 10 Ultimate Alien: Cosmic Destruction when it releases in October this year.
