Today, I had a chance to tour Natsume's booth at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals is one of the Nintendo DS titles that the publisher is pushing for Holiday of this year.
The demo at the booth was a small dungeon and boss battle. Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals is a re-imagining of the SNES classic Lufia 2. The Lufia 2 team has reassembled for this project. There are significant changes to the gameplay mechanics between the two titles. First, the game is not a turn-based RPG; it is now a action-adventure game with RPG elements. Second, the party system is overhauled. One character is playing on screen at a time, but by using the touch pad you can instantly switch to any available party member.
The demo centered around saving the kidnapped girlfriend of one of the main characters. In order to save the damsel I had to traverse a dungeon. Moving foward required me to find keys and defeat many enemies. The combat has both melee and magic (known as IP). The X button will attack using your weapon, and the Y button will use special abilities which is different for each character. Attacks can also be charged by using the R button. The demo ended with a simple boss battle.
The game will be between forty and fifty hours long and and feature voice acting. It also will be friendly to action-adventure players that are new to RPG elements. If your party dies, players will be given a chance to raise their level by five instead of grinding.
Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals will release quarter four of 2010.
