This afternoon at the Square-Enix booth at E3 I got a chance to play the newest title in the long standing Final Fantasy series; The 4 Heroes Of Light for the Nintendo DS. From my short time with the game it's evident that the developers are aiming for a return to the 'classic' Final Fantasy gameplay of four classes, simple story and straightforward gameplay. However don't assume there is no depth in the game because the RPG masters over at Square-Enix have crafted an intelligent and tongue-in-cheek story as well as a combat system that while simple offers a ton of depth and really gives the combat a rich feel.
The art style seems to follow the 'simple' model employed by the various gameplay aspects by using a clean and classic look that while in 3D harkens back to the earlier games in the series. As for the game's controls, you can move your character either with the D-pad or touchscreen. The touchscreen also allows access to all your options while in combat, ranging from attacking to using items and everything in between. It's a clean and simple system, that while doesn't push the series further it does seem to be a refreshing return to the Final Fantasy roots.
Look for Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes Of Light to release on October 5th 2010 on the Nintendo DS.
