When Super Smash Bros. for the WiiU and 3DS was announced, Nintendo and series director Masahiro Sakurai loosely stated that the game was set for 2014. An exact date was not given, but that date has been firmly planted in the minds of gamers eagerly anticipating the latest entry in the series as Spring 2014. A recent press release by Nintendo Germany backed these claims recently by stating that both Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 would be launching in Spring.
Sadly, a tweet from Masahiro Sakurai himself has confirmed that, while the WiiU and 3DS entries are still slated for 2014, a Spring release date is not to be expected; it was actually a mis-translation.
While it is sad to see an eagerly anticipated game not quite making the deadline that the fanbase had come to hope for, it's at least good to know that the game is still on track for a 2014 release.
