We knew it would happen soon, since Nintendo of Japan previously warned us of it, but it's now official: The Nintendo Wii has been discontinued in Japan. The decision closes the book on Nintendo's popular console in Japan, one year after the company announced that it was no longer creating games for the system.
However, the decision to discontinue the Wii only affects Japan. A North American Nintendo representative told Gamespot that the Wii will remain available in that region.
"The announcement that the Wii console has been discontinued is specific to Japan," the representative said to Gamespot. "There is no change in the status of Wii in the United States, and it is available for purchase this holiday season."
That's good news for those looking to buy a Wii this holiday season in North America.
