Newly formed Canadian independent development studio Red Barrels announced its first game yesterday. The studio boasts seasoned game industry veterans, who have worked on the Prince of Persia, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell franchises.
Outlast is a survival horror game set in the secretive Mount Massive mental asylum in Colorado. You play as journalist Miles Upshur who travels there to uncover the truth about it. Previously entirely unaware of the danger within, Upshur must travel to the heart of Mount Massive and find the secret within if he wishes to stand any chance of escaping with his life.
“There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them,” said Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels.
“Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games,” said co-founder David Chateauneuf. “We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”
Also released was a teaser trailer for Outlast, which appears to feature gameplay, although this is not confirmed. More footage will be released on 31st October. Here is the teaser:
