<![CDATA[Three New Grand Theft Auto V Trailers Now Live - News]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/news/90019/three-new-grand-theft-auto-v-trailers-now-live/ Every new sunrise is just another day less we have to wait for the launch of the next Grand Theft Auto game. Unless you've been trying as hard as possible to avoid any news on the game (and then why the heck are you even reading this?) you would know that GTA V will have three protagonists for you to play as.

So it is fitting that three new trailers were released simultaneously, each letting you delve a bit deeper into the motivations of the trio of new characters.

Michael has been living a bit too spoiled and wants to get back into the game for some excitement.

<![CDATA[Kevin Conroy Not Returning For Arkham Origins - News]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/news/90012/kevin-conroy-not-returning-for-arkham-origins/ There have been many a man to put a voice to the Batman but the one with the gravelly milkshake that brought all the boys to the yard, Kevin Conroy, is looking very unlikely to return for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins game.

kevin conroy

I'm the goddamn Batman.

This is all according to the latest NAG Magazine, which reports that Warner Bros. Games Montreal has decided on using an as yet unnamed voice actor. While this has yet to be confirmed directly by Conroy or Warner Bros Games Montreal, it should be noted that this is still technically a rumor.

lobo injustice

For those unaware, Lobo is to the DC universe what Duke Nukem is for videogames. After a bit of reconning from his original appearance, he became an over-the-top parody of the love affair the 90's had for the anti-hero trope (think Wolverine and Punisher). Lobo, the only surviving member of his species (because he personally killed the rest of them) who works as an intergalactic bounty hunter. He cusses like a (PG-13 rated) sailor, flys a space motorcycle, and has strength and durability at levels enough to hold his own against Superman. Really he is a Mortal Kombat character that happened to be designed by Keith Giffen for comic books.

<![CDATA[XCOM Shooter Gets a Name and Release Date - News]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/news/90005/xcom-shooter-gets-a-name-and-release-date/ Way back in the year 2010, I saw a preview event for the revival of the XCOM franchise. No, this wasn't the reveal of the recentely released tactical role-playing strategy game by Firaxis. It was a first person shooter that had you and two AI teammates go to a house and shoot black goo and then take pictures of flying saucers. The audience was ... less than excited.

Well this is nearly three years later and the now twice reworked XCOM shooter has re-emerged. It will be called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, a third-person tactical shooter developed by 2K Marin. The release date is set for August 20th in North America and the 23rd for other regions, coming to PC, Xbox 360, and the PS3.

xcom shooter bureau

It will be set in 1962 (the height of the Cold War) and will tell the origins of the XCOM organization. In it you play as the Bureau, an organization that was created to "deal" with the Soviet Union threat, but shifted focus when extraterrestrials popped up. You will take on the role of special agent William Carter, who fights to both thwart the alien invasion and cover up their existence.

<![CDATA[Batman: Arkham Origins Coming this Fall - News]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/news/89951/batman-arkham-origins-coming-this-fall/ The May cover of Gameinformer magazine has revealed that two new Batman games are releasing this fall. One will be called, Batman: Arkham Origins which has a release date set for October 25th for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. As many have speculated and the title suggests, the game will be a prequel to Arkham Asylum.

Warner Bros. Montreal is taking the reins on this one, hoping to live up to the shadow being cast from Rocksteady Studio's Arkham series. The game's plot involves eight of the world's deadliest assassin's all showing up in Gotham City on Christmas Eve. Naturally, they have declared it bat hunting season.

<![CDATA[Cling! (iOS) - Review]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/review/89947/cling-ios/ Back in the long, long ago of my childhood, a quarter was a gateway to many treasures. A huge gumball, two handfuls of M&Ms, and little plastic sculptures were all but a wrist turn on the handle of a vending machine. Probably of all these things, the ones that my parents regretted allowing me to have the most were the wacky wall crawlers. These little elastomer (elastic polymer, no really, it's a real word) toys shaped sort of like an octopus were coated in a slightly sticky chemical. When thrown against a wall, it would stick to it and then 'walk' down the wall like Spider-man after Mardi Gras.

These kids know 'what up'

These were the inspiration for developer First5 Games' new iOS game, Cling!. In it you play as a one-eyed, eight-legged, purple capsule toy named Edgar. His capsule broke on the way to his new owner. That adds up to having to navigate 90 of the most danger filled levels I've experienced in some time.

<![CDATA[MegaMan Composer to Write Songs For Shovel Knight - News]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/news/89933/megaman-composer-to-write-songs-for-shovel-knight/ Shovel Knight is becoming something of an indie darling. It has met and surpassed its Kickstarter goal. It will be playable on PC and, as previously reported, it is also coming to Wii U and 3DS. Self described as a "hot mashup of new and old that may remind you of Mega Man."

Well if the 8-bit inspired graphics and gameplay don't remind you of Mega Man enough, it looks like it will now sound like Mega Man too. Yacht Club Games has announced that Manami Matsumae is on board to compose two songs for the upcoming Shovel Knight.

<![CDATA[Lego City Undercover (Wii U) - Review]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/review/89921/lego-city-undercover-wii-u/ It was back in March when I first took on the case. First day of spring. Not that the heavenly landlord had seen fit to spring for a higher heating bill. It was a cold, cruel breeze that met my face upon leaving the local game merchant's shop. Sharp and cutting like a Lego brick against an unshoed foot. But then, I guess that's fitting considering what my case involved.

Lego City Undercover. A title for the Wii U. Darn rare thing these days.

I've been down this stretch of road before. Electronically commanding digital replicas of the plastic brick foundation of my childhood. Only this time there was a twist. No double feature. Lego wasn't sharing the limelight with Lucas, Rowling, or Tolkien. It was the only train on the track, trying to get where it needed to on its own steam. Good for them.

Then there he was.

lego city undercover

Chase McCain.

First time I heard the name my face almost cracked in humor. Almost. He was like a casserole. You can see all the ingredients in his recipe but it was spoon fed to you all at once. No matter how many law enforcement tropes went in, his personality was still just like his hair. Plastic.

Maybe plastic is what this world needs. You have plastic firemen driving plastic firetrucks down plastic avenues to put out plastic fires. Real water though. You can splish and sometimes splash. Creepy how it never rains, though. It's always sunny. At least on the surface. Below that surface, a plot was developing.

<![CDATA[First Look At the Next Game from No More Heroes Studio - News]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/news/89913/first-look-at-the-next-game-from-no-more-heroes-studio/ Back in January, it was announced that GungHo Online Entertainment would be acquiring Grasshopper Manufacture. Grasshopper, is best known as the development company run by Gouichi Suda (who is best known as Suda 51) makers of Killer 7, No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, and Lollipop Chainsaw to name a few. It is about two months since and they have started working on their first game together.

killer is dead

It will have gameplay that is based in Grasshopper's signature hack and slash over the top action. Not too much is known aside from that and the confirmation from ol' Suda 51 himself that the protagonist will be female. But some concept images have been released.

<![CDATA[Keep, Fix, or Ditch: Building a Better Legend of Zelda (part 1) - Article]]> http://www.gamrreview.com/article/89888/keep-fix-or-ditch-building-a-better-legend-of-zelda-part-1/ It is once again time for a Keep, Fix, or Ditch where we take a look at a series (like say Mario or Smash Brothers for example) and describe how we hope the next installment will be.

Keep: For things we want to see return.
Fix: For good ideas that need some tweaking.
Ditch: For something that should not return. Not always something that is terrible, just something that wouldn't work in future installments.

You're online reading an article you found on a gaming website. I'm just going to go ahead and assume you know what the Legend of Zelda is. Since it is such a long-running major videogame franchise, there is no way a single article can do it justice. So this first part will simply take a quick look back at the history of the franchise. It will remind everybody of what worked, what didn't, and what maybe could have worked out better.

And before you jerk rush to the comments:

*Yes, all release dates are based on the United States releases.
*No, the CDi games don't count. Frankly, I'm getting tired of you reminding me.
*I'm mentioning Link's Crossbow Training here so you can't say I forgot about it. Just like drinking decaf, it also doesn't count.

zelda

Legend of Zelda

Look, I know this game started it all but you have to be honest with yourself. The game feels rather archaic to play today. Any issues this game might have were long since fixed in the more recent installments. It still has a well deserved place of honor in gaming culture, but I'm not going to let nostalgia goggles blind me to some of the flaws. This is not that kind of an article.

Keep: Open ended exploration
In most cases the dungeons can be completed in the order you find them, not some pre-set path. The series became quite linear after this.

Fix: Botched localization
Yes, it is an issue that is mostly a relic of gaming's early days. For a westerner, there is a level of charm to the quirkiness that cultural differences in a Japanese created game can produce. This is just a reminder that if you are going to put a hint like "You can't use arrows if you have no money" don't somehow have that translate into "Eastern most peninsula has the secret" in other versions.

Ditch: Next to no hints on what to do
There aren't many gamers who don't love the freedom to explore. There are just as many gamers who hate the "I don't know where to go" feeling of being lost. There is nothing wrong with allowing players to get their bearings with clearly marked goals. Just make them optional and everybody will be happy.

zelda

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Loved by some, but hated by many, Link's second game has become the black sheep of the core Zelda franchise. It is also the gaming poster child for not fixing what isn't broken. If you hate that your sequels feel too much like the previous one, feel free to blame the gamers who shunned Zelda II and taught the industry that there is such a thing as too much change.

Keep: Challenging combat
When asked, the first thing a person who has played this game will say is, "it's hard". The combat was challenging and unforgiving. The series has seemed to have forgotten that there is joy to be had in strategic fighting. Beating a boss by inserting weapon A into weakness B is not quite as satisfying as over coming great odds through skilled use of the Master Sword.

Fix: Leveling system
There is nothing wrong with a character-based game having experience points. It is a simple way to show character progression that in the best cases gives the player the option of crafting a hero to fit their playstyle. Allowing you to have control over how your hero improves helps to make the player feel like they are in control, instead of just following a dotted line of acquiring the pre-destined equipment upgrades.

Ditch: Link's ability to jump of his own free will.
It just feels wrong. So very wrong.

zelda

A Link to the Past

While the great debate still rages over which game is the best in the series, people almost universally will hold this SNES classic up as the best of the 2D Zeldas. In fact, any list of the best retro games of all time seems incomplete without it.

Keep: The balance of puzzles, exploration, story, and combat.
It is quite amazing how it balanced all of its elements. Some games are so focused on giving you a story they don't give you the freedom to explore. Some games throw in boringly simple puzzles so they can say the game isn't 100% action. There are a sadly few number of games that find the perfect level of moderation in all of these things.

Fix: Repetitive combat
If there is one nitpicky negative, it is that there comes a point in the game where you no longer fear combat. The amount of enemies are fine, but you have become a demigod of death and the challenge just isn't there. After the initial feeling of empowerment wears off, the enemies become little more than a momentary speedbump in your journey.

Ditch: Link having pink hair.
I mean ... what in the world was going on there?
